The Lion King at Keller Auditorium

Ranked currently as the third of Broadway’s longest-running shows of all time, The Lion King has brought the 1994 original film to life with several shows that have landed in not just numerous locations in the U.S., but also Canada, South America, and Europe among others. On September, it adds one more to its toured cities as The Lion King will be arriving in Keller Auditorium at Portland on Wednesday 24th September 2025!

Disney's The Lion King, since its creation and adaptation to the Broadway stage in 1997, has allowed distinct methods in theater to shine so much more. With a timeless tale translated creatively to the live stage with the distinct usage of life-sized animal puppets and an African-inspired song list and compositions, the Broadway show was considered an excellent surprise to both supporters of the previous motion picture and even new viewers.

In addition to a very inspired creation, the historic play is also assuredly one of the most successful musicals in every award season the show was included in. In just a year after its first performance, Disney's The Lion King was nominated for over 20 awards, garnering 6 Tonys at that awards season which includes Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (by Richard Hudson), Best Choreography (by Garth Fagan), Best Lighting Design (by Donald Holder), Best Direction of a Musical and Best Costume Design (by Julie Taymor). The award given for Best Direction of a Musical is considered major, as Julie Taymor is the first female director to ever be presented with the award.

Over the next two decades, the Broadway hit carried on to take all the awards and commendations with more than over 70 major arts awards and nominations conferred. In its many tours and productions all over the world, it has been awarded by numerous bodies including the NY Drama Critics Circle, The Grammys, the Laurence Olivier Awards, the Molière Awards, and the Helpmann Awards.
