ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
The jukebox musical written by playwright Catherine Johnson has been seen by over 70 million people worldwide, grossing over $ 4.5 billion since its 1999 debut. Featuring ABBA’s songbook, including “Lay All Your Love on Me,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “SOS,” “Money, Money, Money,” “Thank You for the Music,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Mama Mia,” and many more.
With productions in London’s West End, it’s the fifth longest-running show in West End history, celebrating 10,000 performances in 2024. Its Broadway production ran for 14 years, being the ninth longest-running show in Broadway history.
English musical producer and creator Judy Craymer met Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson back in ‘83, pitching the idea of a musical inspired by their pop songs which he believed had theatrical potential. The duo wasn’t as enthusiastic about it, but weren’t exactly opposed to it. By 1997, Catherine Johnson was tapped to write a book for the musical, and Phyllida Lloyd became the show’s director.
The first North American production opened in Toronto at the Royal Alexandra Theatre back in May 2000. Its U.S. debut took place in San Francisco at the Orpheum Theater. By 2001, it opened on Broadway, directed by Phyllida Lloyd with choreography by Anthony Van Laast. Mama Mia became the ninth longest-running Broadway show and the longest-running jukebox musical in history, All in all, it had 5,773 in Broadway before its final run.
Now, Mama Mia continues to delight audiences around the world with performances in over 60 countries across 6 continents, including Australia, Austria, China, Croatia, Greece, Indonesia, India, Philippines, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Thailand, Qatar, the United States, and many more. Filling the air with the music of ABBA in over 440 major cities, Mama Mia has been said to premiere in new cities faster than any other in musical history.

In 2002, it also received a Grammy nomination for “Best Musical Theater Album.” At the Tony Awards, Mama Mia was nominated for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and Best Orchestrations. At the 2003 Touring Broadway Awards, the show won “Best Musical Score.”
