The Story of Some Like It Hot

The show goes back to in the early 1930s just prior to the end of the Prohibition era. Two male jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, spot a mobster commit a crime at the Speakeasy where they are working. Rather than allow the mobster to make them a target, the musicians go on the run.

They put on costumes and join a touring all-female swing big band called Sweet Sue and the Society Syncopators. While touring, the two become infatuated with the band’s singer, Sugar Kane. They keep their real identities protected, but they both hope to fall in love with Sugar Kane.

Whilst touring, engagements form that threaten to expose Joe and Jerry as men. The mob and the FBI become involved, recognizing Jerry and Joe from their tap-dancing routines, further complicating the groups traveling to performances and its ability to find new investors.

Jerry, who now must pass off as Daphne, falls falls for an investor, leading to a marriage proposal. Eventually, true identities becomes known, but that doesn't affect their feelings for each other. As Prohibition expires, the characters are able to move on with their new lives.

Show origins

This beloved musical comedy was written in 2022 with Marc Shaiman’s music and lyrics, Scott Wittman’s lyrics, and Matthew López and Amber Ruffin’s book. It received 13 nominations for the 76th Tony Awards. Among its four Tony Awards, it won Best Costumes and Best Choreography, meaning you’ll appreciate the visual portions of the show as much as the beautiful music and lyrics. It features entertaining tap-dancing numbers, too.

This Broadway Show follows the captivating story told in the 1959 movie by the same name. The film starred the beautiful Marilyn Monroe, making it highly popular at the time. The new musical retells this time-honored story from the film with a twist while being true to the vintage comedy and musical styles from the movie.

History

Some Like It Hot began its run at the Shubert Theater on Broadway in late 2022. Its final performance was near the end of 2023. The shows North American tour kicked off in the back half of 2024 and continues now. You now can experience the show in your vintage theater in Portland.

In addition to its Tony Awards, Some Like It Hot earned the Best Musical Theater Album Grammy Award in 2023. Although the original film had a few songs, the new Broadway adaptation of the musical added many more. Some of the most famous songs from the musical include:
