Some Like It Hot at Keller Auditorium

Set in Chicago during Prohibition when jazz music was all the rage, "Some Like It Hot" draws similarities to another famous Broadway show, Chicago. Jazz elements enhance the entire show as the main characters, Joe and Jerry, are struggling musicians working to survive on speakeasy performances. Their lives face an unexpected wrench when they witness a gangster committing a crime in their mob-controlled speakeasy and need to disguise themselves as female musicians to protect their identities as new criminal targets. 

Joe takes on the persona of Josephine, while Jerry disguises himself as Daphne and the two join an all-female swing band. The band's singer Sugar Kane becomes a challenging part of their tale as the two men try to woo her without getting caught. The growth each character tests their strengths and teaches them unexpected lessons about themselves. 

If the story sounds familiar, it's because "Some Like It Hot" is a Broadway adaptation of the 1959 movie of the same name, which starred prolific actors Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe. The movie itself was based on the 1953 French film Fanfare of Love and has since become one of the most culturally relevant movies in American cinema. The movie earned three Golden Globe Awards and one Academy Award and was among the first class of 25 films chosen by the US National Film Registry to preserve for future generations.

The film's widespread success led it to become the basis for the 1972 Broadway show "Sugar", and even various stage productions in the 1990s, and eventually, the 2022 Broadway adaptation. Audiences can't get enough of the show and hurry to secure tickets for performances at Keller Auditorium and others across the country. "Some Like It Hot" features music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Marc Wittman, the creative minds behind numerous hit musicals like "Hairspray" and "Catch Me If You Can." 

The production includes toe-tapping dance numbers and truely lovable songs like "I'm California Bound," "Baby, Let's Get Good," and "Zee Bap." The original Broadway cast earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for their recording of the show's soundtrack.
