This question remains: did Italian maestro Giacomo Puccini realize in 1895 when he finished his masterful music to Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa’s libretto, just how popular La Bohème would become in the years to come? The opera in four acts, based upon Henri Murger’s 1851 novel Scènes de la vie de bohème has, since its premiere in 1896 at the Teatro Regio in Turin, Italy, become a standard in Italian operatic repertoire, regularly performed around the globe. Apart from this, this iconic opera also inspired many modern interpretations, such as the massively successful musicals Rent and Moulin Rouge!, and various other films.
This fall, the Portland Opera will be breathing new life into Puccini’s tragic tale of love and poverty under the masterful hand of director and choreographer Cara Consilvio, and conductor Nicholas Fox, featuring the Portland Opera orchestra, chorus, and children’s chorus. Audiences can also look forward to the great vocal depth, chemistry, and gleaming registers of Hope Briggs as Mimì, Alok Kumar as Rodolfo, Markel Reed as Marcello, Jason Zachar as Colline, Adrian Rosales as Schaunard, Richard Zeller as Benoît and Alcindoro, Nathaniel Catasca as Parpignol. Apart from the star-studded casts’ talents, the Portland Opera’s production of La Bohème also features breathtaking scenery, incredible theatricality, and an exceptional attention to detail. From the grandeur of Puccini’s score and the precision in its delivery by the renowned Portland Opera orchestra to the chemistry that oozes straight into the hearts of audience members, from the deep-plunging storyline to the amount of prowess on show, La Bohème is set to dazzle, to enchant, and to move you in ways you have never experienced before!
