Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the concoction of Jack Thorne and showing in Portland this summer. He drafted the original play with some direction from the original series’ author J.K. Rowling and beloved theater director John Tiffany. The original Jack Thorne script initially only contained a frugal two acts. But the creators expanded it to four for an compelling musical performance that audiences would always hold dear.
This Harry Potter play adaptation begins when Albus Potter meets Scorpios Malfoy on their way to Hogwarts. While Albus cannot match his father’s valorous renown, Scorpios fumbles with his own unfair reputation as a death eater’s offspring or the circulating rumors of being Voldemort’s child.
Each character faces relatable coming-of-age challenges like creating an image that diverges from family histories and ending generational curses. They hope to instigate a better future for themselves and their cohorts. Their approach involves using a time turner so that they can return to the past and keep Cedric Diggory — one of Voldemort’s targets — alive.
Can altering the past correct the wrongs of the present? Or will it make things worse for the imprudent pair? The Harry Potter play promises to answer these questions during its nearly three-hour runtime. The audience can grab refreshments and hydrate during a brief intermission at the performance’s half-way point.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child obtained global success with performances in Melbourne, Australia, Hamburg, Germany, and Tokyo, Japan. It has enthralled audiences far and wide since its 2016 premier at the Palace Theatre in London, England. Each production flawlessly utilizes original scores from art-pop icon Imogen Heap.
