Hadestown is Anaïs Mitchell’s modern mythology adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love story. After drawing up the original scores and scripts in 2010, she turned to acclaimed stage director Rachel Chavkin for assistance in 2012. Together, the pair perfected the play for public, off-Broadway showings that began in 2016. Hadestown would graduate from its modest beginnings to a sought-after spot on Broadway and other beloved stages in London and Canada, making it a global success.

Welcome to the Underworld, where Hades runs a productive but stringent factory called Hadestown. The below-ground workers perform their sisyphean duties daily in hopes they’ll eventually earn their freedom. Meanwhile, Orpheus and Eurydice take pleasure in a passionate courtship above ground, despite the trials of winter’s famine.

Once Hades forces his wife Persephone to return to Hadestown, an early winter escalates above-ground famishment. Eurydice, affected by insatiable yearnings and influenced by the tempting song of the Fates, obsesses over the security Hadestown promises. She eventually makes her way to the underground industrial complex and signs a contract in exchange for guaranteed food.

Her contract entraps her, and it’s up to Orpheus to rescue his bride-to-be. But an resentful Hades, pressured by his discontented workforce, stands firm in the contractual agreement. Can Orpheus free his one true love with Persephone’s help? Or will Hades bind Eurydice to do his bidding for eternity?

In 2019, the musical acquired 14 nominations and eight awards at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown would also claim a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. Its glittering achievements and full-house audiences demonstrate the play’s connection with a present era while combining classical elements from the past.
