A Beautiful Noise – The Neil Diamond Musical at Keller Auditorium

The Broadway musical, written by the four-time Academy Award-nominated Anthony McCarten, was directed by Robert Gaudio and the two-time Tony Award-winner Ken Davenport. With over 6 decades of Diamond’s music, the team produced a “musical collage” with showtunes that take on "lives of their own”, as McCarten stated in an interview with The Boston Globe. 

This magical two-hour-and-15-minute tale comprises two acts, the first ending with the timeless classic Sweet Caroline, followed by a 15 min intermission. After restocking on refreshments, rejoin the show for another hour of outstanding acting and storytelling.

The Production

Many lifelong fans of Neil Diamond still remember when his 1976 album, A Beautiful Noise, first dropped. They will never forget seeing the musical of the same name when it came to Portland. The exciting performance entranced audiences from the very beginning with a mesmerizing Broadway show and uplifting songs. 

The musical soon ended up on NYC Broadway, which lastest from late 2022 into early 2024 at the Broadhurst Theatre. Famed actors like Will Swenson (who played the young Neil Diamond), Mark Jacoby (present-day Diamond), and Linda Powell (The Doctor) reprised their roles from the Boston production. 

The show swiftly took to the road. Now, new faces make up the traveling cast, including the American Idol winner, Nick Fradiani. Fradiani announced he would play the role of the young Neil Diamond. 

The Story

The story follows the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Famer, starting in the present day with Westenberg sitting in a therapist’s office. Neil Diamond talks about how he can no longer sing like he used to while the doctor helps him cope with that realization throughout A Beautiful Noise. 

The production goes all the way back to Diamond's childhood days, examining his introduction to music and all the good and bad times since then, including his journey to stardom and battle with depression. But, what long-time Diamond lovers anticipate most is reliving Diamond’s catalog of hits in the Neil Diamond Musical.

Awards & Reviews

While the Broadway show was nominated for Outstanding Production of a Musical and Outstanding New Broadway Musical by Outer Critics Circle Awards, the performers were the real stars. Hoggett, Hurder, and LeProtto won Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway Show for choreography and dance. Other award nominations include the Drama Desk Award and Drama League Awards.
