Hadestown is Anaïs Mitchell’s contemporary mythology adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love story. After drawing up the original scores and scripts in 2010, she turned to acclaimed stage director Rachel Chavkin for assistance in 2012. Together, the twosome polished the play for public, off-Broadway showings that began in 2016. Hadestown would progress from its unassuming origins to a aspirational position on Broadway and other much-loved stages in London and Canada, making it a world-wide sensation.

Eurydice, affected by dissatisfaction and influenced by the alluring suggestions of the Fates, obsesses over the salvation Hadestown promises. She eventually finds herself in the underground industrial complex and signs a contract in exchange for survival.

Her contract snares her, and it’s up to Orpheus to rescue his bride-to-be. But an embittered Hades, pressured by his dissatisfied workforce, stands firm in the contractual agreement. Can Orpheus free his one true love with Persephone’s help? Or will Hades compel Eurydice to do his bidding forever?

In 2019, the musical acquired 14 nominations and eight awards at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown would also claim a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. Its glittering achievements and wall-to-wall audiences demonstrate the play’s kinship with a present era while combining classical elements from the past.
