Their neighbor, the eccentric Doc Brown is a scientist who has created a working time machine. Now, Doc was accidentally doused with radioactive plutonium while loading it into the Delorean (the time machine) and he needs to be driven to the hospital. Marty takes the Delorean but accidentally accelerates to 88 miles per hour. It’s the exact speed the machine has to achieve in order to travel to the future. Now, Marty is stuck in 1955 and accidentally disrupts events that would have led to his parents getting married in the future. Now, he has to find ways to get everything back to normal or his existence will literally disappear forever!

The musical’s book is written by original Back to the Future screenwriter Bob Gale. The story is loyally based on the 1985 film which was also co-written by Academy and Golden Globe winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis. The musical features music by Grammy and Primetime winning composer Alan Silvestri and highly regarded lyricist Glen Ballard. The musical also brought in Broadway heavyweights including Tony winning director John Rando. The creative team also includes highly talented people including Tony and Olivier Award winning costumer designer Tim Hatley, choreographer Chris Bailey, musical supervisor Nick Finlow, Olivier Award winning designer Tim Lutkin, and four time Tony winning sound designer Gareth Owen. 

In 2022, the musical secured seven Laurence Olivier nominations and won Best New Musical. That same year, the West End production also bagged a total of four WhatsOnStage Awards, including Best New Musical, Best Lighting Desing, and Best Sound Design. Two years later, the musical opened on Broadway and secured two Tony nominations and five Outer Critics Circle nominations.
