Some Like It Hot at Keller Auditorium

It’s really heating up this summer and fall as Some Like It Hot heads out across North America into cities in both the U.S. and Canada. Hitting over 20 stages in total, the tour stops off early right here at Portland, OR’s Keller Auditorium before heading on to Sacramento, Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Boston into next year.

A musical comedy set in the wild Prohibition era, based on the 1959 film of the same name, Some Like It Hot follows the exceedingly unlikely story of musicians Joe and Jerry. The duo get caught up in a mob hit and need to get out of sight and out of town fast. So naturally, they sign up with a traveling band. The catch? It’s Sweet Sue’s all-female band! Now disguised as women, Joe and Jerry and Sweet Sue’s band board the train for an epic, cross-country tour to the sound of lively jazz, for a whirlwind of romance, comedy, and identity exploration.

Winning 4 Tony Awards, including Best Choreography and Best Costumes, in 2023, this revival show has all the glitz and glamour down, and as for the songs, well, it also took home the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album! “A tap-dancing, razzle-dazzling embrace of everything you love about musical theater,” yes, it’s got dance and jive and tap and jazz all dressed to the nines in Prohibition-era Chicago with speakeasies and gangsters and big bands, and everyone flips gender norms… in short, this was one heck of a train ride! It’s a Best Musical by the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle!

The show runs for 2 hours and 45 minutes, including one intermission, and is recommended for ages 12 and up due to mature themes and comedic innuendos.

Featuring Tavis Kordell as Jerry and Daphne and Matt Loehr as Joe and Josephine. The charismatic singer Sugar Kane is played by Leandra Ellis-Gaston, while the millionaire with a romantic subplot, Osgood is portrayed by Edward Juvier. Ensemble members include Tommy Sutter, Jay Owens, Jamie LaVerdiere, and Devon Goffman as Spats. Some Like It Hot is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon and Mean Girls), has music by Marc Shaiman, with lyrics co-written by Shaiman (Hairspray) and Scott Wittman (Hairspray), a book by Matthew Lopez and Amber Ruffin. Costume design by Tony winner Gregg Barnes, lighting design by Natasha Katz, and sound design by Brian Ronan. Orchestrations are by Charlie Rosen and Bryan Carter, and music supervision is by Mary-Mitchell Campbell and Daryl Archibald.

Keller Auditorium in Portland, OR

Easily found at 222 SW Clay St, Portland, OR, the Keller Auditorium, built in 1917 as the Civic Auditorium, was renovated in the 60s and now boasts a grand proscenium stage, ideal for large-scale musicals like Some Like It Hot. Comfortably seating just shy of 3000 guests across its various levels, it is Portland’s biggest performing arts venue and hosts all manner of shows, from big Broadway productions, to ballet and concerts.
