Amidst a tumultuous time and widespread rebellion in 19th century France, a convicted criminal by the name of Jean Valjean severs his parole after a significant period of time on the chain gang. Through the actions of a good samaritan, Valjean is able to start his life anew and invents a brand new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, in due time attaining the positions of a factory owner and a mayor. Though previously lucky in building his new life, hidden from his rival Javert, Valjean is regrettably involved in the dangerous political landscape of Paris, wherein Jean Valjean is forced to find answers that would change the lives of the people around him forever.

This story of Les Mis, full of love and loss, has been going on for approximately four decades in multiple theaters over many different countries. Since its first showing in French theatre in the late 20th century, it has secured its place not only as part of the most amazing plays of the past 4 decades, but also one of the shows with the most awards as well. In 1987 by itself, it topped the nominations and awards of the Tonys, with 12 nominations and 8 out of 12 wins. Les Mis obtained awards as Best Direction of a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, and Best Featured Actor and Actress in a Musical. Later on, the box office hit went on to gain awards and nominations in its subsequent performances in Australian, Toronto, and Broadway tours including from the Helpmann Awards, Dora Awards, Green Room Awards, and as expected, the Tonys once again.

Currently, Les Mis has impacted an audience of over 130 million people globally, touring 53 different countries and produced in a large array of 22 distinct languages. These achievements are expected to rise exponentially, particularly with the global musical soon also coming to Oregon and expected to be shown in Keller Auditorium, Portland on Sunday 5th April 2026.
