Set largely during the time span in the middle of the Rebellion of 1832 in France, the musical, Les Misérables is the tale of Jean Valjean, a citizen of Paris, France who was convicted for close to 20 years due to stealing a loaf of bread for his nephew. After his release on parole, he breaks free and looks for a new life free from the law; Valjean then takes on a brand new name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still hiding from the law and Javert, an officer with a rigid belief in the law and set on apprehending and bringing the ex-convict back to prison.
Transpiring over a span of approximately twenty years across its two acts, Valjean becomes intertwined through fated encounters with several main characters in every part of Les Mis – Fantine is one of Monsieur Madeleine’s factory laborers who is the mother of an illegitimate infant; Cosette is the foster child of Monsieur Madeleine, who by no surprise Fantine’s infant; Marius, a student on the side of the rebellion and the destined love match of Cosette. Other roles featured in the musical include the Thénardiers, abusive proprietors who think only of themselves and are obsessed with making profit by all means; Eponine, their daughter, who harbors a secret love for for Marius; and supporters of the rebellion namely Gavroche, a young but cunning child, and the revolt’s leader, Enjolras.
This motley group of characters who are part of one struggle and their unique stories are adapted skillfully on a live platform, not just with the musical's 19th century French-based clothing and prop creations, but distinctly with the musical being sung-through fully from beginning to end. With iconic songs like “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as part of its astounding score, Les Mis is able to reveal the underlying motives beneath every character that comes to life in each performance.
