Composer Charlie Smalls and playwright William F. Brown’s Afro-American adaptation of L. THE WIZ exploded onto the musical scene in a puff of smoke in 1974 in Baltimore, after which it moved to the Majestic Theatre on Broadway where it ran for four years of sold-out performances. THE WIZ made its mark among the Broadway-elite, earning no less than seven Tony Awards, five Drama Desk Awards, and two Theatre World Awards.
