It’s a good year to be visiting or residing in the City of Portland! Year 2023 to 2024 season brings another amazing string of ballet performances by the esteemed Oregon Ballet Theater! The prestigious Ballet company delivers five excellent productions each year, and it’s set to launch this fall season! Led by the new artistic director, Danielle Rowe, the Oregon Ballet introduces a line-up of exciting titles for the 2023 to 2024 season. Firstly, the company introduces the return of Christopher Stowell’s Swan Lake! This classic ballet production, by the former OBT creative director kicks off the season with a bang! This show will feature a grand symphonic orchestra led by the esteemed conductor, Maestro Enrique Carreon-Robledo. Swan Lake first premiered at the Keller Auditorium in 2006. The original production received an overwhelming response. The performance made its return in 2013. This 2023, Swan Lake makes its grand return and is set to feature the exceptional talent of the OBT Roster. In a statement, Rowe expressed her excitement in having Stowell return with the production. “Christopher and I have known each other for years as colleagues and friends. We have a great working dynamic, and I’m excited for what we will bring to the stage!” Swan Lake premiers on October 6 at the Keller Auditorium and will continue until the 14th, 2023.
Oregon Ballet Performances
For the winter season, OBT is set to deliver another ballet classic, The Nutcracker. George Balanchine’s production features the wonderful music of legendary composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The Nutcracker is a treasured holiday extravaganza that tells the story of Clara, who receives a wooden nutcracker shaped like a little man. The nutcracker turns out to be a brave toy soldier who battles against the mischievous mouse king. He later transforms into a handsome prince and brings Clara to the Land of the Sweets. The series will hold 19 performances with music accompanied by the OBT Orchestra. Resident music director Raul Gomez-Rojas will be leading the grand symphonic orchestra. Nutcracker kicks off on Friday, 9th December, and will hold its last performance on Sunday, December 24th. OBT will also have a special sensory-friendly performance on Tuesday, December 19th, at noon. It’s a one-hour performance that is condensed to provide a supportive environment for individuals with sensory processing challenges.
During spring, a perfect romance and fantasy epic takes over Keller Auditorium. Peter Pan is a groundbreaking production featuring the work of acclaimed performer and choreographer Trey McIntyre. This show will have the amazing roster dance along with a wonderful score by Sir Edward Elgar. Niel DePointe, founding OBT Orchestra music director, has also used his amazing talent to arrange Elgar’s work, while Thomas Boyd has designed a breathtaking and elaborate set. Lastly, the production brought in top-tier Broadway designer Jeanne Button to provide the punk-inspired costumes. Peter Pan premiers on Saturday, 17th February, and will hold eight performances at the Keller Auditorium until Sunday, 25th February.
Oregon Ballet History
Since its founding in 2003, the Oregon Ballet Theater has been steadfast in promoting the art of dance.
